Maine Wooden Buoys
Maine Wooden Buoys is owned and operated by James and Kimberly Richards.
We are a husband and wife team.
James learned to make these while helping his grandfather, who was also a Maine lobsterman, when he was a child. Maine lobsterman now use Styrofoam buoys instead of cedar.
We live in along the mid-coast of Maine in the small fishing village of Friendship.
We are always open to your suggestions and ideas. Let your imagination go wild and design your one-of-a-kind buoy today!!
Here is a photo of some original wooden lobster pot buoys used by a Maine lobsterman. These were usually cut by hand. Original buoys like this are extremely hard to find.
James does all the cutting and machine work - he's good at that. Kimberly does the sanding, priming and painting. Every buoy is different in size and shape due to the shape of the cedar log. No two buoys are every the same.
We have two sons and two granddaughters - all of which live close by. When not working on buoys, James is a full time lobsterman. Most of Kimberly's time is with the buoys.
Since all buoys are a natural wood product, there is a chance that our buoy may or may not have a crack or may develop a crack over time. There is no way to determine when and/or if this will happen. This is what makes them unique and adds character to your buoy.
